Chances are, you’re probably here because you’re looking for easy ways to make money as a stay at home mom. You’re tired of the scams, all of the side hustle ideas that don’t fit into your unpredictable schedule, and those work from home jobs that don’t pay enough to buy groceries. Right?
The good news is, you’re in the right place.
In my five-year experience of being a full-time mom, I can tell you with total confidence that there are NO shortages of real opportunities to make money for stay at home moms!
The perfect jobs always come down to this.
I’ve tried many, MANY different ways to make money as a stay at home mom and these are the most important things I always consider:
- The pay – No one expects to work for pennies. But no side job or work-at-home opportunity should ever promise to make you rich either. So if it’s a job that pays enough to cover your groceries, then I’d say that’s a good side job to have for extra money.
- The schedule – When you’re a stay at home mom with small kids or you’re homeschooling, then you can’t expect to work during traditional (9 to 5) work hours. You’ll need a side job that gives you the freedom and flexibility to work whenever you want to (like during nap time or in the evening!).
- The workload – A side job isn’t meant to be a full-time job. If the workload is going to pull you away from your family for long hours at a time, then you’ll have to decide if it’ll work with your family life.
I try my best to find side jobs that hit this sweet spot, but to be honest, those jobs are harder to find.
Either the pay and the schedule are great but the workload is consuming. Or the workload and schedule are great, but it takes a long time to make good money. Or the pay and workload are amazing but the schedule is quite demanding.
Most of the time, it’s easier to hit numbers 1 & 2 (pay and schedule) than it is to hit all 3.
If you find that to be the case for you, then that’s okay! Because if you have more time on your hands than you have money, you can ALWAYS add another side job to your plate!
The 5 Best Ways to Make Money As A Stay at Home Mom
1. Turn your house into a home office.
Small business owners often need help with managing social media accounts, answering emails, scheduling appointments, and more. So if you’re detailed-oriented and great at meeting deadlines, then becoming a virtual assistant may be perfect for you!
Tasks like data entry might fetch $10-$15 an hour, but if you have a specialized skill or expertise, you could make $100 an hour or more!
You’ll get paid to complete virtual tasks, many times as an independent contractor.
Potential earnings: $2500/month! This amount will depend on the services you provide, hourly rate, and the number of hours you’re willing to work. Here are over 150 services you can offer as a paid virtual assistant to make big bucks from home!
2. Get paid to write articles around the web.
If you love to write, then freelancing for other blogs, magazines, and websites is absolutely a good side job to look into! You can literally get paid to write about anything — parenting, food, sports, women’s health, you name it.
Here is a FREE list of 200+ freelance writing topics to choose from if you don’t know what you should write about. Typically, with most writing opportunities you’re paid anywhere from $3 to $300 per post you write.
Obviously, the more content you can crank out the more money you will make and the higher rates you can charge which is why freelance writing is a great side job for moms!
Potential earnings: $2000/month! You can learn all about how to become a paid freelance writer here.
3. Snap photos for families.
Anyone can be a photographer! All you need to do is invest in a good camera like this one and start practicing your skills on your kids or pets before you begin taking on clients.
Then you can offer family portrait photography and promote your services on social media. The best part about photography is you can book as many clients as you want, set your own rates, and be your own boss.
I do recommend taking a professional photography class or hop on YouTube to sharpen your skills as your business grows.
Potential earnings: $1600/month! (And that’s only if you shoot two families each weekend, and charge $200 for a one-hour outdoor session, which would include 25-30 fully edited photos accessible online for families of up to 5 people!)
4. Start a home-based daycare.
You’re already at home, so why not? I’m sure you know a few working moms that would love to have you watch their little one(s).
Use your experience as a stay-at-home mom to your advantage and earn some income by watching a few additional (1, 2, or 3) kids right at home!
Potential earnings: $600+/month! You can charge $150/week per child depending on where you live! You can use this guide to start your home-based daycare.
5. Start a mom blog.
Another way to capitalize on your love for writing is to start a mom blog! Granted, it can take a while before you start making the kind of money that’ll pay for your groceries, but this side hustle IS worth it.
I blogged as a hobby for three years and was only making pennies. Then I started treating my blog like a part-time job and I earned my first $100 a month later.
And I’m technically still new at this, but this time I’m staying committed and working really hard to see how much more my income can grow. So if you have the patience to put in the sweat equity it takes before you start seeing a return, then blogging might be for you!
Perhaps, one of my FAVORITE things about blogging is it’s so CHEAP to get into. Because these days you can actually start a blog for under $4 a month (which is cheaper than ordering Starbucks any day!).
And because it’s YOUR blog, you can write about ANYthing: parenting, food, marriage, religion, health, finances, homeschooling, crafts, etc.
Potential earnings: up to $100/month (for new bloggers). If you’re interested in blogging to make an income from home, you can use this step by step tutorial for beginners.
